Sculpting Sand

Size does matter

Below is an photo of how big the sculpture is in comparison to a person.

We built a huge sand sculpture for Christmas

This year in Perth City  have made  a massive 100 ton sand sculpture, five meters high at Elizabeth Quay

(near the “First Contact” sculpture and foot bridge).

This intricately carved sculpture took most of November to make.  Jennifer Rossen (aka Jenny the sand castle girl) grew up in

Perth and she is an International, Sand Sculpture Master who has made a career out of carving sand. She invited her Sand Master friends to build the Christmas Sand Sculpture Village Here in the City 2022.

Sand Sculpture is a performance art and people love to watch as the giant pile of sand is transformed. People visited time and time again to see how simple sand was intricately carved into an incredible piece of fine art.

Our Sponsor ASV sales and service gave us use of an excavator during the pound – up. The Pound- up team included Kaleb Hesse and Yves Geraedts

The sculpture was opened by the Minster the Hon John Carey BA MLA. Pardoo Wagyu presented the sculptors with gift bags and catered the opening with Wagyu beef.

The Sculpting Team also met the Basil Zempilas Lord Mayor of Perth

The city of Perth made a video showing the pound up and how we made the sculpture.

Come and see what six of the world’s best sand sculptors, 100 tons of sand and one month of around the clock work have produced in Elizabeth Quay!

Led by internationally renowned Perth sand sculpture artist Jenny Rossen, they have created a 5-metre high, intricately carved, awe inspiring Christmas Sand Sculpture Village that can only be described as dazzling.

The highlight is a nativity scene carved in the tradition of the old masters, a celebration of Christ’s birth and the meaning of Christmas.  The holy family in the stable, the shepherds, the animals and the angel flying in the sky – the sculpture is a narrative and tells the story with many small scenes and different viewpoints and is made for families to enjoy.

On the other side are fun Santa surprises, showing all the modern Christmas decorations. There are gingerbread men, a candy castle, Santa in his sled and the reindeers.  Kids just love to count all the things in the sculpture. In the evening both sides are beautifully lit up at for night time viewing. The sand sculpture is part of the City of Perth’s Christmas Lights Trail.

“The best part of the job for me, is the first time
I hear someone call out “Oh look it’s a castle” or
a dragon or whatever I am carving.”
explains Jenny
“We use water to make a hard sand pile and then carve out what we are imagining in our heads”

NOT A CASTLE THIS TIME

Nativity Scene

One side will depict the Nativity Scene carved in the tradition of the old masters. This is the holly family in the stable with the animals, bulls, donkeys and lambs. Outside you will see The City of Bethlehem on the hill.

Santa Surprise

On the other side of the sculpture is a fun Santa surprise for the kids. Maybe Santa coming down a chimney or flying off in his sled but we can’t tell you because it’s a surprise.

Lights at Night

Once complete, the sand sculpture will become an evening spectacular which will be beautifully lit up at night. At this time the City of Perth Christmas light trail will be on. Sculptures also look great with specialty lighting features.

Fun family quiz

There will be five smaller table top sculpture carved with Christmas themes. Each sculpture will have hidden pieces carved in the art work, so you can take on the challenge and see if you can crake the quiz. Use the QR code to find the quiz page.

Sandcastle Workshops

We ran sand castle workshops 18th November – 21st through to 2nd December

Beach Sandcastle

Jenny Rossen grew up making sandcastles on Cottesloe Beach, most professional sand sculptors started that way and then a passion for sand took them all around the world . But some sand sculptors never left the beach. Steve from Sandology makes castles on Byron Bay Beach. His specialty is making awesome hippy castles with candles inside for sunset. He makes his living form busking on the beach. He showed people how to make sand stand with beach sand in our special workshops space. The workshops space has gone now all we have are the photos and great memories.

The Christmas Sand Sculpture Village will be on display at Elizabeth Quay Perth until 2 January 2023.

This incredible artwork is part of the CBD Revitalisation Grant Program – delivered by Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries with additional support from Development WA and Pardoo Wagyu, ASV Nothing has ever been seen like this in Perth before!
